The Fallen Firefighters Memorial is a cherished symbol of the Stockton Fire Department, a thoughtfully designed tribute to those lost in Line of Duty Deaths since the department’s inception in 1850. After being hidden in storage due to repeated vandalism in its previous location, it was time to reintroduce the memorial to the community.
WMB worked with the Stockton Firefighters Relief Association to create a meaningful memorial location in front of Station 6. Adjacent to a pedestrian-friendly park, the memorial was carefully placed to bring members of the community and local firefighters together. The Fallen Firefighters sculpture sits on a plinth at the center of the dedicated park, a focal point that can be experienced from all angles. Terrazzo inlays radiate off the plinth to replicate the Maltese Cross, the Badge of a Fire Fighter. Rough and charred memorial bricks lead from the sculpture to the public walkway. A series of rough concrete benches encircle the area, inviting people to sit, contemplate, and celebrate these community heroes. A rounded wall terminates access to the area and shares the names of the 14 firefighters lost in the line of duty. The design balances the beauty of the polished sculpture with rough textures to reflect the extreme conditions faced by these first responders. Thoughtful landscaping seamlessly transitions the park into the memorial area and invites adults and children to engage and explore.
WMB relishes the opportunity to revitalize the community with impactful public destinations, and the team is proud to have played a role in creating a new home for the Stockton Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
