Located in the heart of downtown Merced, the century-old Mainzer Theater needed a transformation to give it new life and purpose in the community. WMB assisted in the restoration and revitalization efforts, preserving existing historic Art Deco features and adapting spaces to accommodate modern needs. WMB’s work involved listing this distinctive building on the National Register of Historic Places to ensure it is recognized and protected as a cultural resource.
WMB carefully maintained the remaining original features of the main theater, including a gilt-trimmed proscenium, hand-crafted Art Deco chandeliers, and a decorative hand-painted ceiling. The team also updated the sound and lighting systems to accommodate a variety of live performances, including a large screen for cinematic events. Cabaret-style seating supports adaptable arrangements for casual gatherings and a variety of entertainment settings. Furthermore, the team converted the second floor into a smaller screening room with tiered lounge-style seating for private events and film screenings. The transformation of an adjacent structure, originally built as a covered bus depot in the 1930s, now offers a contemporary, cinematic-themed restaurant and bar to create a full-service entertainment destination.
The project, in conjunction with the city’s investment in the beautification of Main Street, reactivates the downtown area and brings life back to the historic district of Merced.
